چکیده
We report the results of deep Hα imaging of the ionized gas surrounding the low-redshift (z = 0.0638) quasar MR 2251–178 using the TAURUS Tunable Filter (TTF) on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Our observations reach a 2-σ detection level of ∼ 5 × 10 −18 erg s −1 cm −2 arcsec −2 , more than an order of magnitude deeper than conventional narrowband images previously published on this object. Our data reveal a spiral complex that extends more or less symmetrically over ∼ 200 kpc, making it the largest known quasar nebula. The total mass of ionized gas is 6 × 10 10 M ⊙ (upper limit), a large fraction of which is in a very faint, diffuse component. The large and symmetric extent of the gaseous envelope favors a model in which the filamentary and diffuse emission arises from a large cloud complex, photoionized by the bright quasar. A crude kinematic analysis reveals relatively smooth rotation, suggesting that the envelope did not originate with a cooling flow, a past merger event, or an interaction with the nearby galaxy G1.

متن کاملWeighing black holes with warm absorbers
We present a new technique for determining an upper limit for the mass of the black hole in active galactic nuclei showing warm absorption features. The method relies on the balance of radiative and gravitational forces acting on outflowing warm absorber clouds. It has been applied to 6 objects: five Seyfert 1 galaxies: IC 4329a, MCG−6-3015, NGC 3516, NGC 4051 and NGC 5548; and one radio-quiet ...
متن کاملCorrelated X-ray/Optical Variability in the Quasar MR2251-178
Emission from Active Galactic Nuclei is known to vary strongly over time over a wide energy band, but the origin of the variability and especially of the inter-band correlations is still not well established. Here we present the results of our X-ray and optical monitoring campaign of the quasar MR 2251-178, covering a period of 2.5 years. The X-ray 2–10 keV flux is remarkably well correlated wi...
متن کاملGrowth and anisotropy of ionization fronts near high-redshift quasars in the MassiveBlack simulation
We use radiative transfer to study the growth of ionized regions around the brightest, z = 8 quasars in a large cosmological hydrodynamic simulation that includes black hole growth and feedback (the MassiveBlack simulation). We find that in the presence of the quasars the comoving H II bubble radii reach 10 Mpc h−1 after 20 Myr while with the stellar component alone the H II bubbles are smaller...
